"Who Belongs to the Family of God?"

Proper 5.B.21
Mark 3:20-35
The Rev. Melanie McCarley

A crowd had gathered around Jesus; and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you.” And he replied, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” And looking at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”

"The Honking of the Holy Spirit"

Pentecost.B.21
Acts 2:1-21
The Rev. Melanie McCarley

The Day of Pentecost is rife with symbolism. There is wind, reminding us of the rush of air filling the house where the disciples were staying; and flames alighting upon the heads of Jesus’ followers. Among the varied symbols we associate with the arrival of the Holy Spirit, there is also the dove. The dove calls to mind the Spirit of God alighting upon our Savior at his baptism, and reminds us of the story of Noah and the promise of a new earth born out of the chaos of the flood.
